Trials and tribulations of being a self-taught bowhunter wrote the beginning of my bowhunting journey. It wasn’t until November 2013, after logging hundreds of hours in the tree-stand, I successfully harvested my first mature, northern whitetail buck! A big framed 8 point with chocolate antlers, a unique crook on the tip of his left brow-tine and a cape that displayed characteristics only an experienced, late-season warrior could have. I was ecstatic! The hard work and dedication finally paid off! Without doubt, this deer was worthy of a shoulder mount. Early the next day, I eagerly delivered my prized whitetail to a local taxidermist. Unfortunately, I have never seen that deer again. I exhausted every avenue for recovering my buck to no avail. What happened? I will never know. But I can tell you this – it’s been almost 10 years and I still think about that deer. After that traumatizing experience, I learned the same situation has happened to more people than I thought.
Fast forward a few years to 2021. My target whitetail was a giant. I knew of this buck for several years and with added experience on my side and a few more tricks up my bowhunting “sleeve”, I felt confident. Nothing about the hunt was easy but I folded my tag on that incredible buck in late October. Scoring 209 1/8” with an official net non-typical score of 203 6/8”, “Ricky” was truly a buck of a lifetime. The good news, I had a trustworthy taxidermist to bring him to. But the thought of losing another animal continued to haunt me. Theft, fire or any other possible disaster/accident could happen when you least expect it and it left me thinking about ways to protect what we as outdoorsmen work so hard for.
